VOCALiD is on a mission to use AI to synthesize personalized voices.

VOCALiD is a mission-driven startup that creates—at no cost—custom synthetic voices for people who are unable to speak. To help fund this effort VocaliD also pioneered building synthetic voices for companies and brands, which was the focus of our work.

The end-to-end experience, navigation structure, and even terminology were rethought, and given a more professional aesthetic. We completely revamped the interfaces used for creating and managing the synthetic voices, for voice artists to provide the base recordings, and creating the audio clips themselves.

Research

VOCALiD had an existing voice synthesis creation/editing application but it was quite basic and the workflow required too many steps.

Based on customer interviews and competitive analysis, we realized the software needed to feel like it fit into existing professional workflows for expert customers, but at the same time be easy enough for a supermarket manager to create simple announcements for daily promotions.

Design

We worked with the VOCALiD team to not just re-imagine the UX, but also create whole new functionality including playlists that can be shared with clients for review, creating and managing "takes" of a piece of text, and much more sophisticated controls and annotation mechanisms for fine-tuning the spoken output.

We also paid a lot of attention to streamlining workflows for efficiency as many tasks are repetitive, and the range of user expertise could run from beginner to expert.

Positioning & Strategy

In addition, we worked with VOCALiD’s leadership on product and positioning strategy using tools like value maps, value propositioning, and Business Model Canvas. These helped the team gain clarity into what their key strengths are, and how to stand out in an increasingly crowded market of starts-ups and 800lb gorillas like Amazon and Google.

Results

The new design and workflows immediately gave VocaliD a more compelling offering that was clearly differentiated from competitors, and received high praise from customers.

VocaliD was acquired by Veritone in 2022, and the Parrot Studio product was a key part of the rationale for that acquisition.
